The importance of the water in the current geo-political context turns it into a research theme that focuses on conserving its quality and improving its use conditions in certain systems. The hidrologic cycle consists of water exchanges among rivers, lakes, and oceans, as well as atmosphere and soil. The species of the gender eucalyptus possess a very fast growth rate in relation to native species, what causes a large demand for water, even though their water use efficiency is better. As well as any vegetable species, the eucalyptus uses water to satisfy their physiologic demands, promoting its growth. As a result eucalyptus promotes reduction in the flow of water in watercourses. Areas covered with forest plantations, besides improving the landscape as a... |

Canopies of the locally occurring Amazonian tree species Calophyllum brasiliense. Camb. (Guttiferae, height 10 m) were fogged after dawn on the same day at five adjacent localities in a 20-year-old plantation at the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil, using natural pyrethrum (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%), Baythroid (0.3%) and diesel oil, respectively. The 1152 ants collected represented 52 species, 17 genera and five subfamilies. The highest number of ant species was obtained with the synthetic pyrethrum Baythroid 0.3% and with natural pyrethrum 1.5%. About 46% of the total ant species were only collected in the first hour after fogging, and 17% only during the second hour, after trees had been heavily shaken. About 73% of the total ant specimens dropped... |

A variação... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the effect of spacing on the growth, biomass allocation, and wood quality for energy purposes of Acacia magium. A randomized complete block design was carried out with three replicates and five treatments consisting of trees planted at different spacings: 2.0x2.0, 2.5x2.5, 3.0x2.0, 3.0x2.5, and 3.0x3.0 m. At 67 months after planting, the following species parameters were evaluated: performance (mortality, diameter growth, height, bark factor, and bark and biomass volume yield) and wood energy quality (basic density, higher-calorific value, ash, fixed carbon, and volatile materials) through the analysis of variance. Plant spacing did not affect volume and biomass production per hectare nor wood quality for... |

This study aimed to assess the natural regeneration in stands of Araucaria angustifolia (PA) and Pinus sp. (PP) without management in Campinhos State Park, in the Municipality of Tunas do Paraná, Parana State, Brazil. Eighteen plots of 10 m2 were installed, 7 plots for PA and 11 for PP. All trees higher than 1.5 m were sampled and their circumference were measured at 1.30 m above ground level. In PA stand there were 586 individuals, corresponding to 67 species and 29 families and in PP stand 442 individuals of 58 species and 22 families were measured. The most important species in PA were Cordyline spectabilis, Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus and Clethra scabra; and in PP were C. spectabilis, Lonchocarpus sp.1 and Cupania vernalis. PA showed phytosociological... |

Stem CO2 efflux is a highly variable component of the carbon budget of forest ecosystems. It reflects the balance between the CO2 respired by the living stem tissues, less the CO2 dissolved in the xylem sap moving upward in the transpiration stream, plus the CO2 transported from the roots and released at the stem. Although knowledge about such fluxes at different spatial and temporal scales has markedly increased, knowledge of the effects of silviculture treatments, such as fertilization, on stem CO2 effluxes are still limited, particularly when connecting above- and belowground processes. Using measurements obtained from twin plots (one control, one fertilized) installed in five-, 12- and 23-year-old stands of Pinus radiata, the objective of this study... |

In last decades, the increase of Eucalyptus plantations was relevant in Brazil, especially in the global scenario. Several studies showed that these cultures, especially those guaranteed by certification mechanisms, can bring social and environmental benefits. This paper presents data collected in the period 2002-2011, where we show richness data of plants, birds and mammals in eucalyptus plantation farms in Brazil. It is discussed the importance of these areas to biodiversity conservation, where have been recorded 1,320, 620 and 55 species of woody plants, birds and medium and large mammals, respectively. It was registered the occurrence of endangered plant species in the plantations understory: Araucaria angustifolia, Couratari asterotricha, Buchenavia... |
